ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Tuesday said the government would not bow down before the agenda of the extremists, who believe in destroying girls’ schools.
“Let me assure you that our government is determined to implement, in letter and spirit, the vision of our Shaheed leader of a greater and stronger Pakistan, despite the great challenges of extremism we are facing these days,” he said while addressing a function on International Women Day at the Prime Minister Secretariat.
The function was also attended by Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza besides women parliamentarians. The prime minister expressed his government’s commitment to a strong legislative cover to address women issues, which is evident through the measures taken so far.
The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2009 has been enacted along with Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act passed by the parliament last year, he added. He said the government is addressing the subject of economic empowerment of women through various initiatives. “Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), the largest ever programme to provide financial support directly to the women of poor households is the bedrock of these initiatives.” Among others, he said, it provides skills and technical training, health insurance and loans without markup up to Rs0.3 million.
He said the BISP has provided Rs25,000 for female beneficiaries in the flood affected areas and it is not only contributing directly to the income of 5 million poor families across the country but has also empowered women by channelling cash transfers through them.
He said the government is committed to providing a conducive environment to the working women so that they are able to join the work force with confidence and without fear.
“On my directives, CDA has allotted two plots one each in Sector G-6/2 and G-7/3 of Islamabad for construction of working women’s hostels and necessary funds have been allocated during this financial year for their construction,” he said. A chartered PIA aircraft was sent to Tripoli on Monday toevacuate the Pakistanis from Libya. The plane is expected to bringhome 460 Pakistani nationals from Tripoli in the early hours of March 8.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with Ministryof Interior, FIA and Overseas Pakistanis Foundation has madearrangements for receiving Pakistani nationals returning from Libyaat the airports in Karachi and Islamabad.

According to a Foreign Office press release issued here onMonday, in addition, arrangements have been made for therepatriation of 176 Pakistanis from Antalya, Turkey.
A special chartered aircraft with 176 Pakistanis on board willarrive in Islamabad around 2300 hrs tonight. Earlier, thesePakistanis were airlifted from Saba (Libya) by a chartered flightand brought to Antalya.
On Monday morning, a special chartered flight brought 251Pakistanis from Tunisian Island of Jirba. Another, 260 Pakistanisarrived at Islamabad from Cairo by a chartered PIA flight. The PIAwould operate another sortie on March 8 to bring remaining 199Pakistanis from Cairo.
