PM, COAS discuss security issues

ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had an unscheduled and extensive meeting with Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Tuesday evening. The one-to-one meeting continued about one hundred minutes and it is understood that the issues of grave security concern to the country came under discussion. Interestingly when the meeting between the Army chief and prime minister was in progress at the PM’s House, the high echelon delegation of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) was engaged in meeting with Asif Zardari at the presidency. The two separate meetings at the presidency and PM’s House have no direct link with each other but the timings have brought conspicuous importance to the both. The meeting at the PM’s House started immediate after the departure of the visiting President of Tajikistan Emomali Rehmanov, who first inked four bilateral agreements with the host country and then the prime minister hosted dinner in the honour of the Tajik president.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar was significant with her absence from the banquet that was also attended by federal Ministers Amin Fahim, Dr Arbab Alamgir, Mir Israrullah Zehri, Mir Hazar Bajrani, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, Babar Awan, among others. Meanwhile sources in the PM’s House told The News that no subject concerning to the political situation came up under discussion in the meeting between the prime minister and Army chief. The meeting has added significance in the backdrop of question of extension in service of the prime military intelligence gathering outfit, the ISI Chief Lt General Shuja Pasha for two years and it is expected that the same would be granted by the prime minister keeping in view the ongoing war on terror in which General Pasha has been playing considerable role in the forefront.
