LAHORE: Additional District and Sessions Judge Yousaf Aujla on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of a double murder trial against US national Raymond Davis till March 16 after handing over the case record to the counsel of the accused.
On Tuesday, the court could not frame charges against the accused Davis as his lawyers insisted that they were not provided the complete record of the case, a requirement under the law. So, the court directed the prosecution to give the complete record of the case to the counsel.
As per the court sources, Raymond yet has not signed the copy of the challan handed over to him on the first hearing of the case on February 25. The trial held here at the Kot Lakhpat Jail amid tight security as more than 100 personnel of law enforcement agencies had cordoned off the jail.
US Consul General Carmela Conroy, along with two Americans who had recently arrived in Lahore to assist Raymond’s local counsel, was present during the proceedings. However, the media was again barred from the trial proceedings. Jail authorities produced handcuffed Davis before the court.
On Tuesday, Shahzada Mazher and Naseer Uddin Naeer, advocates, appeared on behalf of the accused. They informed the court the case record had been handed over to them and sought more time to examine it.
They said their client enjoyed diplomatic immunity. However, the court did not give weight to their arguments. The court adjourned the hearing till March 16, informing the counsel that charges would be framed against the accused on the next hearing. The News
