LAHORE: The Pakistan cricket team on Thursday departed for their tour to the West Indies Team Manager Intikhab Alam said he was hopeful that the young players included in the squad would prove their merit during this tour.

Pakistan-India to resume cricket ties

NEW DELHI: India and Pakistan have agreed to resume direct sporting ties, reports said on Thursday, and an Indian cricket tour of its neighbour could be on the cards.
The decision comes two weeks after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani watched together as their teams played in the semifinal of the World Cup in India.
Several Indian newspapers cited unidentified government sources as saying the question of precisely when and where the first cricket series between the rivals might take place would be decided by the two national cricket boards.

KARACHI: Soon after Shahid Afridi was installed as Pakistan’s one-day captain last year, the flamboyant all-rounder announced that his most cherished desire is to help his country win World Cup 2011.
Afridi did lead Pakistan impressively to the World Cup semi-finals but his team flopped against old rivals India in Mohali on March 30.
Now Afridi, who has been retained as Pakistan’s limited-overs captain following the World Cup defeat, has set his sights on the ICC World Twenty20 Championship to be played in Sri Lanka next year.
“The only way I can really overcome the disappointment of our defeat against India is by winning the Twenty20 World Cup,” Afridi told ‘The News’ before his departure for West Indies on Thursday.

MIRAMSHAH/PESHAWAR: Inaugurating the Rs4 billion Bannu-Ghulam Khan Highway, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Thursday said that the Army would leave North Waziristan after restoration of peace in the volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Supreme Court admits Shujaat, Moonis pleas for DG FIA’s removal

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday admitted for hearing three applications moved by PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Moonis Elahi, says a press release issued by the PML-Q on Thursday.

The applications seek court orders to remove FIA additional director general Zafar Qureshi from the National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) scam probe and start an investigation against him.

In the applications, Chaudhry Shujaat and Moonis Elahi say the main accused in the NICL scam, Habibullah Waraich and family, has deposited all required amount to the FIA, but Moonis Elahi, his wife and other family members were being harassed by Zafar Qureshi.

22 militants, 2 soldiers killed in Mohmand Agency

GHALLANAI: Twenty-two militants and two soldiers were killed while 35 others, including 10 soldiers, sustained injuries in clashes in Baizai and Safi Tehsils in the troubled Mohmand Agency on Thursday, official and tribal sources said.

The sources said that 22 militants were killed and 25 others sustained injuries after jet fighters and gunship helicopters blitzed their hideouts in Woch Kohi, Khayali Kor and Surran Darra in Baizai tehsil.

Drone attacks core irritant : Foreign Office Spokesperson

ISLAMABAD: Describing the continuing drone attacks as a “core irritant”, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tehmina Janjua on Thursday said that Pakistan was approaching “friendly countries concerned about counter terrorism to prevail upon the United States to stop such attacks”. Addressing the weekly press briefing, the FO spokesperson, however, stopped short of revealing the identities of such ‘friendly’ countries.

Janjua’s comments came after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s announcement on Wednesday that Pakistan was engaging friendly countries to exert diplomatic pressure on the US to stop the drone attacks in the tribal Areas.

Pervez Musharraf wants NRO declared void

ISLAMABAD: Ex-president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, who signed the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), now wants the international guarantors to declare the agreement void and his party leaders in Pakistan say he will not abide by it any more since they say the PPP has gone back on its promises.

As he prepares to formally begin political activities, after recently returning to Dubai from UK, Musharraf has started contacting the guarantors to get out of the NRO commitments, within Pakistan and abroad, paving the way for his return to Pakistan.
