Karachi - Discussions about Muslim women are frequently reduced to polarizing debates on the secular-modern-western versus Islamic-conservative-eastern failing to recognize the complexity of their lives and their roles in society, historically and today.
To explore these lacunae in knowledge, and engage public and professionals in a productive discourse, the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplant (SIUT) has organized a four day seminar on the theme, "Muslim Women: Through the Lens of History, Religion, Law and Society." Eminent national and international speakers will deliver plenary talks on various aspects of this theme. Speakers include Asma Jehangir, President Supreme Court Bar Association speaking on "The Role of Pakistani Women in Nation Building," Khalid Masud, Former Chair of CII on "Law and Ethics in Islam," Ziba Mir Hosseini from University of London on "Muslim Women's Quest for Equality," Farid Esack from the University of Johannesburg on "Islam and Gender Justice," and Kecia Ali from Boston University on "Women, Marriage, and Divorce in Classical Islamic Law."
The seminar will be held in the Dewan Farooq Medical Complex of SIUT from the 14th to 17th March, 2011.
