Aman Ki Asha Strategic Seminar Pakistan, India peace initiative begins

The two-day strategic seminar Re-Engagement for Peace organized by Aman Ki Asha,an India, Pakistan peace initiative launched by Jang Group of Pakistan and Times of India Group began Tuesday in Karachi
with presentations by Daniel Jouanneau & Michael Koch, ambassadors of France & Germany to Pakistan on how their countries moved beyond a history of hostility to a relationship of friendship, economic integration and the learnings for Pakistan & India.
The participants who later held deliberations behind closed door on resolving issues, commerce, trade,counter terrorism, people to people contacts, changing the paradigm at official level include Lt.  General (rtd) Javed Ashraf Qazi, Aziz Ahmed Khan, former Foreign Office spokesman, Bashir Ali Jan Mohammed, industrialist, Dr Ishrat Husain, former State Bank Governor, Shafqat Mahmood, Dr Maleeha Lodhi, Rahimullah Yousufzai, Salman Haider, former Indian foreign secretary, Ravi Dhariwal, CEO of Times of India, Radha Kumar, director Mandela Center for Peace & Conflict Resolution, New Delhi, A S Dulat, former Chief of Indian Research & Analysis Wing RAW, Mani Shankar Aiyar, member of parliament, Sushobha Barve, director Center of Dialogue & Reconciliation, Dr Ajay Darshan Behera, associate professor at Jamia Millia Islamic University. Major General (rtd) Mahmud Ali Durrani, former National Security Adviser is moderating the seminar. Jouanneau describing Aman ki Asha as a good initiative said European Union was established due to reconciliation between France & Germany who pledged to make war impossible in Europe. French, German reconciliation was due to exchange of visits by youth, people, media, intelligentsia, educationists, lawyers. He said 27 states who became EU members have no border dispute.  EU is largest integrated open market, largest aid donor. Europe was experiencing largest period of time after Roman empire, he observed.
Koch felt that situation between Germany and France was different from Pakistan and India and cannot be applied to the tactical level in this region. He said decision of reconciliation between Germany and France was taken by their nations and societies over many decades.
Later answering a question, Jouanneau said “we cannot be a substitute for Pakistan and India to resolve their border dispute. We can only encourage dialogue.”
Dhariwal called for removing mistrust and more people to people contacts between Pakistan & India. Shahrukh Hasan Group Managing Director Jang Group in his remarks welcomed delegates of both countries at strategic seminar which was campaign for peace between Pakistan & India. Aman ki Asha launched on January 1, 2010 organized cross border CEO forums, strategic discussions, Indo-Pak business meets, editors conferences, cultural, literary festivals in the past year.
