MQM decides to quit Sindh govt

KARACHI: Relations between the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) once again reached the lowest ebb following yet another controversial statement by Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, as the MQM said it had decided to part ways with the PPP and a formal announcement in this regard or otherwise would be made after the party’s meeting with President Asif Zardari today (Tuesday).

A delegation of the MQM, led by Dr Farooq Sattar, will meet President Zardari to apprise him of the situation arising out of the provocative statement of Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza.

MQM Rabita Committee Deputy Convener Dr Farooq Sattar rang up Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday afternoon and apprised him of the situation in this context. Addressing a press conference just after the meeting of MQM Rabita Committee in London and Karachi on Monday, Sindh Information Technology Minister Raza Haroon said the party had decided to part ways with the PPP and the final announcement in this regard or otherwise would be made after the party’s meeting with President Zardari today.

He was accompanied by MNA Haider Abbas Rizvi, Youth Minister Faisal Sabzwari and Wasay Jalil. Talking to The News, Wasay Jalil said in the meeting with President Zardari, the party would not demand anything from the government, but would only convey the MQM’s grievances since it happened to be the coalition partner.

According to MQM senior minister Sardar Ahmed, the offices of the party ministers remained opened on Monday and the staff worked in a normal manner; however, the party will continue boycotting the Sindh Assembly session.

The MQM Rabita Committee is closely monitoring the whole political situation in London and Karachi, simultaneously. It may be recalled that it is for the second time that the MQM has decided to part ways with the coalition government or sit on the opposition benches owing to the provocative statement of Dr Zulfiqar Mirza.

Political observers feel that certain forces within the PPP are bent upon causing damage to the government and weakening President Asif Ali Zardari through Dr Zulfiqar Mirza. The MQM earlier demanded that Zulfiqar Mirza should tender an apology, following which President Zardari directed the provincial home minister to visit the official residence of Altaf Hussain at 90 Azizabad.

The MQM has a lot of other reservations these days; however, the issue of Mirza’s statement could complicate coalition’s affairs. It may be noted that whenever relations between the PPP and MQM get strained, people start apprehending disturbances in the city.
