Two activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were killed on Monday in what police suspected to be incidents of target killings.
Syed Ahsan Arif, 35, was shot dead near the Lal Flats of Gulistan-e-Johar in the Sharea Faisal police limits.
According to the police, the victim was waiting for a bus when two men riding a motorcycle arrived at the scene and opened fire on him. The assailants managed to flee after the attack. The injured was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was shot three times and the police also recovered the empties of a TT pistol from the scene of the crime.
Investigators said Asif was an employee of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and an activist of the MQM. He was married and left behind a widow and children. The investigators termed the murder of Asif a target killing. A case has been registered and investigations are continuing.
In a separate case, 34-year-old Saleem was shot dead and Zubair injured in an attack on Monday evening near the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, which lies in the Shamim Shaheed police limits.
The police said Saleem and Zubair were heading towards the Nazimabad area on a motorcycle when armed men in a white car and two on a motorcycle pulled up alongside and opened fire on them. After carrying out the attack, the assailants escaped.
Locals present at the scene rushed the injured to hospital, where Saleem was pronounced dead while Zubair was said to be in a critical condition.
Investigators said both the victims were members of the MQM and that Saleem belonged to the party’s Nazimabad sector. Saleem was a resident of the Shamim Shaheed area of Nazimabad, while Zubair lived in the Gulbahar locality. Both were close friends.
After the attack, senior members and activists of the party reached the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they staged a protest and demanded that the killers be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, unidentified men resorted to aerial firing and forced shops to close in the Nazimabad and Paposh Nagar areas of the city. Shops had been closed and the situation remained tense till the firing of this report.
