A court in Pakistan's Peshawar city has granted bail to a US national who was arrested in February for staying in the country even after his visa had expired, a media report said. Sessions court judge Altaf-ur-Rehman accepted the bail plea of Aaron Mark DeHaven but restricted him from leaving the ci ty without prior information, Geo News reported.
DeHaven was arrested in Peshawar last month.
The court also ordered him to submit a bail bond of Rs.2 million.
DeHaven's counsel, Ali Raza, told the court his client had come to Pakistan on a work visa. DeHaven had applied for an extension of his visa that expired in October 2010.
While granting bail, the judge observed that the case and the Raymond Davis episode were not parallel.
Davis shot dead two Pakistanis on a Lahore street Jan 27, saying he thought they were trying to rob him. A speeding car coming to his rescue ended up killing a motorcyclist as well.
Davis is currently in a Lahore prison, facing trial.
The prosecutor in DeHaven's case had referred to the Davis case. But the judge observed that there was a world of difference between the two cases.
The court said it would be blatant injustice to make DeHaven rot in jail till the final disposal of the case. The case was one of illegal stay and not of illegal entry, it said.
