Karachi : World Water Day to be celebrated on March 22 Tuesday all over the world including Pakistan will focus on need for clean water for a healthy world.Water for Life Decade 2005-2015 puts spotlight on water-related programs and participation of women. It hopes to increase efforts for achieving international water-related goals and United Nations Millennium Declaration.
The object of World Water Day 2011 is to focus world attention on impact of rapid urban population growth, industrialization, uncertainties caused by climate change, conflicts and natural disasters on urban water systems.
This Day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment & Development UNCED in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. UN and its member nations devote Day to implement UN recommendations and promote activities within their countries on world’s water resources.
A number of NGOs promoting clean water and sustainable aquatic habitats use World Day for Water to focus attention on critical water issues. Participating agencies, NGOs highlight issues such as a billion people being without access to safe water for drinking and role of gender in family access to safe water.
