Karachi : Doctors, paramedics, social workers and citizens should be given emergency-handling training, besides promoting volunteering culture in the country so as to effectively cope with the crisis situations, said speakers of a seminar here on Monday. The seminar on the topics of bomb blasts in Karachi was held at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical CenterHospital (JPMC).
Associate Professor of Orthopedics at the JPMC Dr Saeed Minhas said his hospital has a detailed recordon all bomb blast occurred in Karachi from the year 1987 to 2011. He said during this period the city braved 121 bomb blasts, in which 683 people were killed and more than 2000 injured. He said in past the death toll in bomb blast used to be low, but now more casualties are being observed in such incidents due to use of powerful explosives and chemicals in the bombing devises.He said people should first try to rush the injured to nearest hospital and focus on providing first aid during way to hospital. He said critically injured people should be rushed first, as people needing first aid could afford a little wait if inevitable. He demanded to initiate emergency-handlingtraining programs not only for medical professionals but also for general public.Incharge Emergency Department and Joint Director of JPMC Dr Seemi Jamali said her hospital was the biggest hospital of the province where all kind of medical assistance to injured of bomb blasts and other terrorism incidents. She requested the media not to block roads leading to the emergency departments of hospital during crisis situation and give news coverage about the injured after they properly get medical assistance.Dr Rohhina Baloch and others also spoke.
