UNHCR, Pakistan household survey on registered Afghans in country

Islamabad : UN High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR in association with States & FrontierRegions SAFRON Ministry is carrying out Population Profiling, Verification & Response PPVR household survey on registered Afghans in Pakistan to collect data, examine their livelihoods, health, social conditions, legal problems.

Data from survey will provide important new information for this longstanding population in Pakistan who mainly fled waves of conflict in their country over past three decades, said Mengesha Kebede UNHCRRepresentative in Pakistan. It will help UNHCR, Pakistan & Afghanistan governments, development agencies better plan their policies and respond to the situation.
PPVR being carried out by UNHCR’s implementing partners BEFARe & EBDM will reach an estimated 120,000 households and continue throughout 2011. “This is important chance for Afghans to tell us about their concerns, aspirations, plans and contributions they make to Pakistan. We encourage them to cooperate with survey teams,” Kebede added.
Joint Secretary SAFRON Dr. Imran Zeb said PPVR will help Pakistan, Afghanistan governments & UNHCR to plan for Afghans welfare. It is essential tool for Pakistan government to implement management strategy, provide useful data to issue work permit and durable solution including flexible visa regime. Pakistan hosts around 1.7 million registered Afghan who have right to stay in the country until end of 2012.
