Karachi : Federal Information Minister, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan says PPP is a party of the Federation and has mandate in all the provinces.
Speaking at lunch, she hosted Saturday for editors at local hotel, she said “we desire concerted efforts be made for service to people for which all parties should contribute.”Media reflects true perception of society and conveys problems of common man and underprivileged class.
“From day one challenges were overall external, internal security, economic challenges, as well as waron terror, Rs 400 billion revolving debt, world economic meltdown, recession. Fiscal space within the budget was not enough to take popular decisions. A government which assumes power with mandate of masses, would not like to take unpopular decisions and at same time make efforts to provide relief to masses,” she said.
“Together we passed 18th Amendment, National Finance Commission NFC Award, provincial and financial autonomy to provinces. For first time, provinces got financial autonomy in a way that Federal Government’s share of resources was reduced and of provinces enhanced. When 19th Amendment can be adopted then Reformed General Sales Tax RGST is not big issue.”
Minister said decisions being taken on economy, may not be popular, but are very essential for national interest. “Economic challenges demand timely decisions. Taxes can be collected from privileged class for benefit of underprivileged. Parliamentarians and politicians should come forward as trend-setters. Problems we face are because instead of self-reliance we banked on reliance on others. Now time has come that we move towards self-reliance.”
