Mohali : Indian cricket fans who were protesting against lack of adequate number of tickets for the high-profile World Cup semi-final between India and Pakistan Wednesday at Mohali were lathi charged Monday by Punjab police outside Punjab Cricket Association PCA Stadium.
Similar incidents have occurred in past few weeks. Police had to resort to lathi charge on fans at oldstadium of Vidarbha Cricket Association in Civil Lines locality in Nagpur following a melee to grab tickets for the World Cup match on March 12. When counters for sale of tickets to general public opened here, there was a mad rush and some fans even broke barriers to reach counters, resulting in a melee, Police said. Similar instances of crowdsbeing lathi charged occurred in Bangalore earlier on February 24 due to heavy demand of tickets.
