Attempts to derail democracy to be foiled: Yousuf Raza Gilani

KARACHI: Dispelling the impression of clashes between the institutions, Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that the PPP will resist like rock if any attempt was made to derail the democratic system.

Talking to senior journalists at Governor House here on Friday, the prime minister said the ongoing tussle between the institutions was a struggle of exercising authority and determining their perimeters. However, he vowed that the government will foil every attempt aimed at jeopardizing democracy. The prime minister said the PPP had rendered sacrifices for democracy and both Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto had sacrificed their lives for the cause of democracy.

Responding to a question about the strike called by the PPP Sindh in the province against the SC verdict on the NAB chief Deedar Hussain Shah, the premier said that it was a provincial matter and he cannot interfere. He said the law and order situation is also the subject of provincial government.

Responding to questions, Prime Minister Gilani said the government was pursuing a strategy to implement its 36-point election manifesto and added that during last three years the government had so far covered 21 points. He pointed out that it was sound and well planned policy of the government that despite global recession, ongoing war against terrorism and devastation of last yearís flood the country had not only achieved autarky in wheat but also exporting it.

The PM said as far Balochistan was concerned, the province was facing multiple issues including terrorism, extremism and attempts by foreigners to implement their agenda. He said that the problems in Balochistan could not be solved in two or three years as during past 62 years no serious efforts were made to mitigate the sufferings of Balochs.

ìThe present government had made attempts to remove their sense of deprivation by extending provincial autonomy and under Aghaz Haqooq Balochistan Package; over 6,000 to 7,000 jobs were provided to youths in Balochistan. Aghaz Haqooq Balochistan is a start and government is trying to ameliorate the lot of people of Balochistan,î he added.

He said the government was working on short, medium and long term projects which would take three to four, five to seven and seven to 10 years in implementation. He said the US was also assisting the government in the power sector.

The PM said had the PPP government did not execute IPP power projects in 1994 despite uproar, the country would have been facing the worst power crisis. He said the government was also working on laying the gas pipeline from Iran and its completion would ease the gas supply situation for industrial sector.

He suggested to opponents of Kalabagh Dam that instead of playing to the gallery the matter should be taken up at the CCI meeting which was its proper forum where the similar issues like Bhasha Dam, ownership of Thar coal had been solved satisfactorily. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah were also present on the occasion.
