Govt defends President’s nominations for civil awards

KARACHI: Federal Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan on Tuesday defended President Asif Ali Zardari’s selections for civil awards.

She said that opposition’s criticism about civil awards was unjustified, adding all awards were awarded on merit. On Monday, Opposition leader in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan lashed out at President Zardari for awarding civil awards to Rehman Malik and Babar Awan.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi, Ms. Awan said that establishment of new provinces on administrative basis was the need of hour.
“Time is gone when there was one province for a population of around 110 or 120 million people,” she explained. “Our government is trying to resolve all problems through talks,” she said.
Awan said that public would reject those politicians, who were dreaming of coming into power by hiding behind an institution. “Our political rivals tried to do politicking instead of uniting the nation on the Independence Day,” she remarked.
Speaking on this occasion, Sindh’s Information Minister Sharjil Memon said that Nawaz Sharif would perform badly in the next general elections.
PPP, he claimed, have implemented 80 percent clauses of the charter of democracy (CoD), leaving no room for Nawaz for doing politicking. Online
