KARACHI: Sindh Government on Saturday has promulgated Sindh Local
Government Ordinance (SLGO) 1979 to restore Commissioner System in the
province.
Acting Governor Sindh Nisar Khuhro signed SLGO 1979
besides two acts including the amended Land Revenue Act 1967 and Police
Act 1861. After this ordinance, 18 towns of Karachi would be devolved
to five districts of the city.
The provincial government has suspended Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2000 and Police Order 2002 with immediate effect.
The
decision was taken during a high-level meeting held at the Presidency
in Islamabad on Friday, jointly chaired by President Zardari and Prime
Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, to review the alarming law and order
situation in Karachi.
The revival of the commissioner system in
Karachi was a bone of contention between the PPP and the MQM which now
has left the coalition. The government has issued notification of the
ordinance to restore Commissioner System within 10 days after political
divorce between these two parties. Online
