Judicial commission on Salim Shahzad asks journalists to submit written replies in one week

Saleem Shahzad Inquiry Commission has asked investigation officer of Mandi Bahauddin to present record of the case and gave one week to senior journalists to submit their written statements.

The meeting of the commission was held in the supreme court building, which was headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar Khan and was attended by Federal Shariat Court Chief Justice Agha Rafiq Ahmed, IGs of Punjab and Islamabad Javed Iqbal, Binyamin, PFUJ President Pervez Shoukat, DIG investigations Punjab, senior journalists including Imtiaz Alam, Nusrat Javed, Hamid Mir, Nasim Zehra, Absar Alam and others.
The commission had invited 16 senor journalists in the meeting; meanwhile in his opening remarks Justice Saqib Nisar said that the cooperation of journalists is vital for tracing the culprits involved in the killing of Salim Shahzad.
He said that the duty of the commission is to point out the culprits involved in the killing and has no authority to punish culprits.
Briefing newsmen after meeting of the Commission here on Saturday, Secretary Information Taimur Azmat Usman said that the investigation officer informed the Commission about sequence of the events.
He said a detailed meeting of the senior journalists was held with the Commission where journalists gave their view point on how to reach to the bottom and proceed ahead in the case.
The Commission asked them to provide information available with them. It was decided that all journalists who remained in contact with Saleem Shahzad or have any information relating to the incident would submit written statements individually and then record their statements as well. The journalists wanted some time for the purpose and the Commission gave them till 18th of this month when the Commission would reconvene in the Supreme Court building in Islamabad.
Replying to a question the Secretary Information said the Commission had decided on the day one that investigation by two IGs would continue. In Saturday’s meeting, the IGs informed the Commission of the progress so far made in the case. Asked about details, the Secretary said it would not be appropriate to disclose details of the investigations at this moment.
To another question, he said telephone record of Saleem Shahzad has been received by the Commission while e-mail record would be available on completion of the legal formalities.
He said the brother-in-law of Saleem Shahzad said the laptop of the murdered journalist was not traceable.
Responding to a question, President PFUJ Parvez Shaukat said the United States should provide information or evidence to the Commission if it had any relating to the incident.
He said on Saturday Matiullah Jan of Dawn recorded his evidence and another journalist Atif Khan provided CD to the Commission.
It is worth mentioning here that this was the third meeting of the commission probing the murder of senior journalist Salim Shahzad. SANA
