HEC role in uplifting higher education is enormous: Saifullah Khan

ISLAMABAD: President Pakistan Muslim League and Chairman Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Salim Saifullah Khan participated as a Chief Guest on the occasion of “Best University Teacher Award Ceremony 2010 organized by Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.

Salim Saifullah Khan has said that HEC has carried out considerable efforts for the improvement in quality of higher education and that is why two universities of Pakistan are now ranked among the top Technology Universities of the World as per QS World Universities Rankings 2010. Chairperson HEC Dr. Javed Laghari and Executive Director Dr. Suhail Naqvi were also present on the occasion.
The Chairman while addressing has announced 2000 Kanals free of cost land for the construction of any kind of University in District Lakki Marwat. He has highlighted that, “I have already donated free of cost land for the construction of Lakki Cadet College however, the construction work on it is yet to be started. He has said that Pakistan is far behind in education as compared to its neighboring countries like China, Sari Lanka, India and Philippine. He has said that 10000 Philippines work in foreign countries and remitting more that 20 Billion Dollars per year.
He has said that Government of Pakistan is not investing in the field of education and the level of education is coming down. He has told that the 60 to 70 percent of our population is comprised of youth from 18 to 25 years of age, but the government is not taking steps to take benefit from the talent of youth. He while citing his personal visit to UK has said that, “I met with the UK Minister for Middle East and South Asian Affairs Alistair Burt and other UK Ministers last week who promised 50 Million pounds for assisting in uplifting of primary and high education in Pakistan.
He has further told that knowledge is the most precious asset of a person which can not be stolen and nor it is lost. He has said that the new world order requires us to prepare our children to face the challenges of the global economy. He said that this involves a substantially different type of education to be imparted, focused not only on the mastery of subject matters but also on the ability to think critically, innovate, communicate, work effectively in teams, and develop entrepreneurship opportunities and flexibility. He said that while investment towards development of high level science and technology manpower is necessary to meet the critical shortage of teachers and researchers, investment in skill development at technical education and management levels and provision of quality education to the majority of our population is equally important.
He said that, “I dream of seeing Pakistan at the forefront of frontier technologies. He has said that the Pakistan’s talented youth has the potential to use these opportunities so that Pakistan can transition from an agricultural economy to a knowledge economy. He has appreciated Ex-Chairperson Dr. Ataur Rehman for his valuable services for HEC and also appreciated the services of existing Chairman Dr. Javed Laghari.
While winding up his address he congratulated best university teachers and hoped that they will continue work with the same spirit for the development of Pakistan. Online
