Public Accounts Committee orders action against ex-controller Sindh House

KARACHI – The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Sindh Assembly on Monday wrote a letter to the Governor of Sindh and Chief Minister to take action against former controller of Sindh House Islamabad, Ali Sajjad, against his alleged irregularities in different heads and his failure to produce record of amount spent without approval of competent authorities.

PAC also gave one-month deadline to Works and Services Department of Sindh Government to verify the deferred paras of the audit report.
The committee, which met with its chairman Sardar Jam Tamachi Unar in the chair at Sindh Assembly building, discussed 38 paras of audit report of Works and Services Department for Financial year 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09.
After discussing audit paras, the PAC settled 20 paras, while 18 paras deferred owing to non-availability of records and approval of competent forum.
Secretary of Works and Services Department informed the PAC that inquiry has been initiated against the former controller of Sindh House Islamabad, but he never appeared before the inquiry team. The department has recommended for termination of services of officer concerned, but according to Provincial Secretary, no action has been taken against him due to his contacts with the high-ups.
The PAC through a letter sought help of Sindh Governor and Chief Minister to take action against the former controller of Sindh House Islamabad.
PAC chairman observed that status of roads in Sindh is worrisome as they destroyed just after completion of construction work.
He asked the Works and Services Department officials to ensure quality material in the construction of roads, which is affecting the credibility of department.
Replying to the queries of PAC, Secretary of Department Rasool Bux Phulphoto said that ad hoc system of posting of officers in the department was main reason behind substandard quality of construction of roads in the province. He pointed out that officers are transferred just after six months, which affects the governance in the department.
