ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Monday announced in the National Assembly an improved career structure for doctors and health professionals.
Making a policy statement in the National Assembly, the prime minister said the new career structure will de-link health professionals from the basic scales.Last week, the young doctors of Islamabad hospitals called off their strike on the assurance of the Federal Secretary, Health, Nargis Sethi, that their demands would be met next week.
The prime minister announced the formation of a committee at the federal level, headed by the health secretary and comprising representatives of the Ministry of Finance and Establishment Divisions to workout further details. “The committee will submit its report within 15 days,” he added.
The PM also gave an assurance that services of contract medical officers would be regularised in accordance with the law.He hoped that the health professionals will now devote all of their energies towards services to the people.

APP adds: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has formally approved a new service structure of medical practitioners and paramedical staff, a spokesman of the Ministry of Health said on Monday.
Talking to APP, the spokesman said that the doctors and paramedical staff will now work in hospitals according to the new service structure and a notification in this regard will be issued soon, he added.
He said that according to the new service structure, new Grade 1-8 has been allocated to paramedical staff while Grade 8-13 has been designated for medical practitioners instead of previous grades.
He said now the medical practitioners will work in the hospital at initial Grade-9 which will be equivalent to BPS-17. He said the doctors will now automatically be promoted to the next grade up to new Grade-13 unlike the past practice of spending years in one grade like in the BPS-18.
He said that the government has also decided to regularise the services of contractual medical practitioners.He said a three-member committee, headed by Federal Secretary Health, and comprising representatives of Ministry of Finance and Establishment Division has been constituted to look into financial implications. He said the committee would submit its report within 15 days.
