Goverment to provide modern liver transplant facilities: PM Gilani

Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani Saturday said the government was committed to provision of best medical facilities to the people including affordable liver transplant.He was talking to a delegation of Royal Free Hospital, London here at the PM House which discussed progress on the Liver Transplant center at the PIMS Hospital.The medical team from London comprising two Surgeons, one Anesthetist, Operation Theater Nurse and a Team Manager are in Islamabad imparting training relating to the Liver Transplantation Centre.



The Prime Minister at present people have to go to foreign countries for a liver transplant which was very expensive and hoped that similar facilities would be available locally with the operationalisation of the Centre for Liver Diseases and Liver Transplant at PIMS.
He termed it a step forward towards achievement of this objective and said the government was working on prevention, control and treatment of Hepatitis on priority and has invested Rs 14.00 billion.
He said the Pakistani doctors have already undertaken Liver Transplant Surgery at Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore, successfully and the government was working on a plan to set up a full fledged facility of Liver Transplant in Islamabad as well.
The Prime Minister directed the Capital Development and Development Division to take immediate steps for expediting the setting up of Centre for Liver Transplant at PIMS.
The Secretary, Capital Administration and Development Division apprised the meeting that treatment of various diseases of liver was underway at PIMS Hospital providing indoor and outdoor treatment including the provision of equipment, drugs and minor surgeries.
He said that Hepatitis B and C patients were being provided complete set of third generation drugs.
Earlier, the head of the delegation of doctors assured the Prime Minister that the team was ready to help Pakistan in establishing the Liver Transplant Centre at PIMS.
They expressed satisfaction over the quality of equipment, the ongoing treatment facility for liver disease and the civil work of the Centre.
The Royal Hospital’s delegation includes Director of Business Development Ms Alison Shutt, Consultant Surgeon Prof Massimo Malago, Consultant Surgeon Guiseppe Fusal, Consultant Anesthetist Dr Colin Beard, Operating Theater Sister Angeline Shoniwa.
Secretary Capital Administration and Development Division Junaid Iqbal Chaudhry, Project Director Centre for Liver Disease and Liver Transplant Unit PIMS Prof Aftab Mohsin, ED PIMS, Prof Mahmood Jamal and other senior officers were also present in the meeting. APP
