Abandoning Pak ‘not an option’: US

The United States' relationship with Pakistan is complicated and important, but walking away from the ties with the key ally is not an option, US President Barack Obama's National Security Adviser has said.

Tom Donilon also acknowledged that maintaining ties with Pakistan and working with it serves American national security interests.

"Its a complicated and important relationship. There are frustrations but there are also important work that we do together and again our job and the National Security Team at the direction of the president is to address our national interests - walking away from this relationship is not an option," the Daily Times quoted Donilon, as saying.

Relations between the two countries have been on a downward spiral since January after CIA contractor Raymond Davis killed two Pakistanis.

Then in May, the killing of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in a secret raid by US special forces further damaged the relationship, with Pakistan seeing the operation as a violation of its sovereignty.

Earlier, this month, the Obama administration suspended some 800 million dollars in military assistance to Pakistan in a show of displeasure over its cutback on US trainers, limits on visas for US personnel and other rubs. ANI
