Supreme Court gives govt three weeks to revamp Election Commission

ISLAMABAD : Supreme Court has awarded three week time frame to the government for the revamping the Election Commission of Pakistan.

A three member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani headed the petition for the correction of the voters list filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry in his remarks said bye-elections cannot be held without revamping the Election Commission. He asked government to correct its mistake otherwise court will cancel the notifications of the winning candidates in bye-elections, which might create greater troubles for the government.
Chief Justice said without revamping Election Commission new voter lists cannot prepared. He said bye-elections held after the passage of the 18th amendment are not according to constitution.
He said court is listening the case patiently and want to award time to Parliament for the solution of the matter but it fails to do so court will issue proper order being the custodian of the constitution of the country.
Meanwhile, Supreme Court rejected the explanation provided by the Election Commission regarding the voter lists.
Moreover, former secretary Election Commission Kanwar Dilshad said revamping the election commission is the responsibility of the Federal government but it is not cooperating with Election Commission.
Talking to a private TV channel he said after the 18th amendment the powers of the Chief Election Commissioner are reduced. SANA
