Three-day conference of Election Management Bodies of SAARC member states begins

A three-day conference of the Election Management Bodies of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Member States began here in Islamabad on Thursday.

The conference is being hosted by Election Commission of Pakistan in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme.
The objectives of the conference are to promote contacts among the election managers of SAARC member states, share experience and cooperate with each other for ensuring free, fair and credible elections.
Addressing the inaugural session, Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Justice (Retired) Hamid Ali Mirza said that in spite of numerous hardships the democracy has eventually emerged as victorious in our countries He said the electoral democracy is deeply rooted in the psyche of our people.
He said the people living in this part of the world have many commonalities to share in the shape of civilization, history and cultural values.
The Chief Election Commissioner said a number of step have been taken to set the Election Commission of Pakistan on modern lines. He said, in this regard, the preparation of computerized electoral roll is underway with the collaboration of NADRA.
