EC to ensure smooth verification of voters’ lists

ISLAMABAD: Secretary Election Commission Ishtiaq Ahmad Khan has said that no one can hijack the process of verification of voters’ list at Karachi.

He was talking to the media after the consultation with political parties here on Tuesday. He said that election commission is making endeavor for rectifying the faults in the system. EC has initiated the reform process since two years and computerized voter’s list is the part and parcel of this restructuring process in which NADRA is fully cooperating in this regard.
“NADRA has issued computerized identity card to almost 93 percent adult population and it has been instructed to issue the same to remaining people”, he added by saying that this time some 4000 government officers would be imparted training to work as Presiding Officers whereas the services of retired judges would be hired for election tribunals , which would give out verdict with 120 days on the objections.
He said that election commission has registration of 160 parties and only 15 large parties were invited in the consultative meeting. He said that election commission would conduct briefing for political parties at district level.
Secretary Election Commission has said that the verification of voters’ lists may be delayed in the areas where flood played havoc. He said that the election commission has suggested the Standing Committee of National Assembly that the results of those ladies polling stations should be treated as cancelled where the turnout would be 10 to 15 percent.
