Commission summons doctors in Saleem Shahzad’s murder case

The Inquiry Commission, tasked to probe murder case of Saleem Shahzad, on Monday summoned doctors who had conducted postmortem of the slain journalist, to appear before it on Wednesday. The Commission took the decision in a meeting held in the Supreme Court building here. The meeting was presided over by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Judge of the apex Court, and attended by other members.
Secretary Information , who is also secretary of the Commission, Taimoor Azmat told mediamen after the meeting, that Najam Sethi, a journalist, had requested for grant of time to record his statement but he was asked to submit the statement as early as possible.
He said that the Cyber Crime Wing of Federal Investigation Agency also presented its report over the usage of cell phone by the late journalist.
According to the report, Shahzad was using a Blackberry cellular phone, however, access to his email data from the same connection could not be made.
The FIA was of the view that mobile companies operating in Pakistan could not de-code his email pass words, he added.
Taimoor Azmat said the family of late media person would have to contact the foreign company itself to obtain such record.
Imtiaz Alam and Qamar Yousuf, two other journalists, also recorded their statements before the Commission.
Inspector General of Police Islamabad Bani Amin also briefed the Commission about progress in the investigation.  The Commission will hold its next meeting on July 28.
The Commission was made set up on the request of journalists’ bodies, who wanted an independent inquiry into the murder case of Saleem Shahzad.
The government on June 19 through the Ministry of Law and Justice had made a request for nominating Judge of the Supreme Court to act as President of the Commission, to be constituted under Section 3 of Pakistan Commission of Inquiry Act, 1956 (Act VI of 1956), for indepth probe of the mysterious assassination of Saleem shahzad.
On June 20, Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry giving his approval wrote in the order “Justice Mian Saqib Nisar is hereby nominated as President of the Commission. It is expected that the Competent Authority, while nominating the other members will also consider their status qua the position of President of the commission, being Judge of the Apex Court.”
