Met office says rains produces water six times of Tarbela dam 400 mm showering unprecedented in history of Sindh

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD)’s Director Dr Muhammad Hanif has said that for the first time in history of Sindh 400 mm rain showered that caused 37 million acre feet of water. The Director of National Weather Forecasting Centre, PMD, Dr Hanif told Online on Monday that 37 MAF of water means six times greater than the total storage capability of Tarbela dam.

He said that this year over 200 percent more than normally rain showered causing floods and devastation in major parts of Sindh province. in the past history of Sindh 127 mm-130 mm rain was recorded.
He said that about 50 percent water out of 37 MAF flowed into ocean or absorbed by ground or was evaporated, however, the soil further capacity of absorbing water is nil. “And water flow in Tarbella and Mangla dam has also been remaining full in the last three weeks, so level of water in canals and grounds across Sindh has no chance to further descrease at least for a month,” he added.
Hanif said that 18-19 MAF of water is still exist on ground in various areas of Sindh and low lying areas in the province would take long time to come to its normal condition.
Dr. Hanif said that in Sindh wheat crop is harvested in October and therefore the wheat production was devastated in advance as 80 percent major crops across the province were already destroyed.
About rain forecasting, he said that the showering would came to end this Tuesday (today) and after that normalization of situation may take one to two months. Online
