ISLAMABAD: The Canadian Government would respond positively on the
appeal from Pakistan Government for global assistance regarding
devastations caused by flood in the province of Sindh.
According
to a press release, Ross Hynes, Canadian High Commission in Pakistan
said to support Pakistan in the devastating floods while talking to
Farzana Raja, Federal Minister and Chairperson Benazir Income Support
Programme (BISP), during his visit to BISP Secretariat on Wednesday.
He
was accompanied by Ms. Rhonda Gossen, head of the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) while Mr. Sher Khan, Secretary
BISP was also present on the occasion.
During the meeting, the
devastation in Sindh caused by floods and the plight of millions of
hapless flood victims came under discussion in length. Farzana Raja
informed the honorable visitors that the data collected by BISP through
nationwide poverty survey could be instrumental for relief as well as
rehabilitations efforts in the province. She briefed the delegation
about the severity of the crisis in the wake of recent floods in Sindh.
Farzana Raja elaborated that more than one million flood victims
are registered beneficiaries of BISP. She said that the flood has added
to miseries of these poor families manifold keeping in view their
already vulnerable economic condition. She said that BISP has extended
its all out support to the families that are in need of dire support.

Raja said that international community must come forward to help
Pakistan in overcoming the devastation on such a massive scale. During
the meeting, she also presented the details about various measures of
BISP aiming to improve the socio-economic conditions of the poor and
destitute segments of society.
The delegation termed the
establishment of BISP to uplift the socio-economic status of the poor
as brilliant idea. Ms. Rhonda Gossen, head of CIDA, underlined the
possibilities of the long term cooperation between BISP and CIDA.
While
taking keen interest in micro-financing and vocational training schemes
of BISP, she lauded the efforts of BISP for invoking the concept of
corporate social responsibility both at domestic and international
level for the welfare of its underprivileged people. Online
