Nato forces’ prolonged stay in Afghanistan not in Pak interests: Hussain Haqqani

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani has said that the long stay of International forces inside Afghanistan was not the in Pakistan’s interest, adding that the Afghan government and people would decide about their future.

Talking to a private TV channel here on Tuesday, the Pakistan’s ambassador to US stated the stable relations with Karzai’s government are in Pakistan’s interests, as confrontation with any neighboring country is not in the favour of the country. He further said that the US would have to take Pakistan into confidence regarding negotiations with Taliban.
He further stated that the talks with Taliban are not as easier, as they have no proper set up and office when you could find them and hold negotiations. Haqqani told the channel that Pakistan and the US have been working together in the fight against al Qaeda terrorists and sharing intelligence
On America’s reputation in Pakistan, the ambassador said it is something that the US has to work on in order to change public opinion and to ensure that the Pakistani people feel the benefits of the US-Pakistan partnership. It is a consistent phenomenon for several years that Pakistanis have not looked upon the United States as a reliable friend ever since the United States walked away from Pakistan in the aftermath of the war with the Soviets, Haqqani explained.
