Pak not to allow anyone to undermine its legitimate interests: Gilani

Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has declared that Pakistan will do whatever it can for stability and peace of the region but will never allow anyone to undermine its legitimate interests.

He was addressing the concluding session of the envoys conference in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister said our cooperation with the United States, NATO and ISAF was based on respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.  Under no circumstances can we accept flagrant transgression of our territorial frontiers.  This, he said, remains baseline and there can be no compromise on sovereignty, dignity and national honour.
Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said Pakistan expects the US, NATO and ISAF inquiry to come out clearly with facts and provide answers to the disturbing questions that Pakistan’s own investigation has raised. He said given the seriousness of the issue, Pakistan has taken several important decisions.  These include closing of NATO and ISAF logistic supply line, vacation of Shamsi airbase and non-participation in Bonn Conference.

He said a broad ranging review of our cooperation with the US, ISAF and NATO is underway.  National Security Committee of the Parliament has been mandated to undertake a detailed study of the Salala attack and make recommendations on the terms of our cooperation with the US, NATO and ISAF.  These will be considered by the joint sitting of the parliament.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan was compelled to take these steps to safeguard its interests.

The Prime Minister said the review and assessment undertaken by the conference as well as its recommendations would be extremely helpful in determining the future course of action.

He said the national unity is our strength and the parliament represents will of the people.  It is also the custodian of the country’s supreme interests.  He said we are making unremitting efforts to forge national consensus on all matters of importance.  He said no policy can succeed if it does not have the support of the people.

The Prime Minister said there is no doubt that our region is passing through a difficult phase.  the satisfactory resolution of the issues relating to Afghanistan poses daunting challenges not only to the region but to the international community as a whole. It is imperative that all efforts should be directed to promoting durable peace and stability in Afghanistan. The principal stakeholders must be on the same page.  SANA
