Ebad asks Sindh govt to help assassinated lawyers’ families

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan has urged the Sindh government to extend financial assistance to the families of the lawyers who have been killed in the recent incidents of violence in the mega city.

He was talking to a delegation of Karachi Bar Association at the Governor’s House here on Saturday. The lawyers’ delegation was led by the bar’s president Mohammad Aqil and General Secretary Haider Imam Rizvi. Former Education Minister Justice (R) Khalid Z Qazi and ex-Advocate General Sindh Dr Farogh Nasim were also present during the meeting.
The delegation briefed the governor about the recent wave of killing in the city that claimed lives of 22 lawyers. Out of 22 lawyers, 14 belonged to Karachi Bar Association, they said. The governor said the lawyers were an important segment of society and have played an important role for restoration of democracy and independence of judiciary in the country.
He assured the lawyers’ community that the government would soon set up an endowment fund for the welfare of the lawyers’ community. After establishment of the welfare fund for the lawyers’ community, the government would also put its share in it, the governor said. The governor condemned that some elements were threatening the lawyers and gave directions to the IG Sindh, AIG and the Interior Sindh to take necessary steps in this regard.
The governor also directed setting up a committee that would comprise officials of the Interior Department and representatives of CPLC and lawyers community. The committee would take swift response of any threat to the lawyers. The delegation also conveyed its concerns regarding the residential problems being faced by the lawyers. Online
