LHC seeks govt’s reply on drone attacks

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Friday sought a reply from the federal government for April 26 on a writ petition seeking directions to the government to stop the drone attacks.

The order was passed by Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry while hearing the petition filed by Barrister Iqbal Jaffery against the US drone attacks inside Pakistan and the ‘suspicious silence’ of the Pakistan government on the sensitive matter.
Arguing his case, Jaffery blasted the Pakistani rulers for alleged callousness towards national interests.
He alleged that the rulers were enjoying a lavish lifestyle and were literally selling the sovereignty of the country only to prolong their regime with the blessing of the US.
The petitioner prayed to the court to ask the federal government for a comprehensive report on agreement/treaty with America and Blackwater, if any, with respect to the drone attacks. He submitted that the government should also furnish the number of drone attacks and persons killed therein and compensation provided to the victims.
The petitioner stated that former dictator Musharraf is responsible for the drone attacks in Pakistan as his unwise foreign policy had turned Pakistan into a weak state. He also prayed to the court to direct the Pakistani rulers to disclose details of their assets.
