The Field General Court Martial convicted seven accused for the 2009 GHQ attack,
including two army personnel and five civilians.
The court after proving the crime awarded death sentence to army sepoy Aqeel
alias Dr Usman, meanwhile four persons were awarded life imprisonment and two
sevena dn eight years imprisonment.
According to the well informed former military officials some officials and
officers of Pakistan army were also involved in the attack; meanwhile it was not
clear weather they were punished or not but it is sure that they would not be
spared.
According to the sources some times the punishments against the serving
officials is kept secret due to the army discipline.
Council of accused Colonel Enamur Rehman Advocate told “BBC” that Aqeel Alias
Dr Usman awarded death punishment and Imran Siddiq was given life imprisonment;
meanwhile fine of Rs 200,000 and Rs100, 000 has been imposed on the two accused
respectively.
The convicted civilians include Khaliqur Rehman, Muhammad Usman, Wajid Ali,
Muhammad Adnan and Tahir Shafiq. The first three have been sentenced to life
imprisonment, while the other two have been given jail terms of seven and eight
years, respectively.
The civilians are considered friends of Aqeel and they have been convicted
for assisting the attackers, helping them finding their targets and inciting
servicemen to wage war against the army.
The proceeding of this case in Field General Court Marshall headed by
Brigadier was conducted for five months in a secret place of Rawalpindi.
Colonel Inamur Rehman said that he had come to know about the verdict from
the families of accused persons who met them in Adiala Jail on Friday.
He said that he cannot receive the copy of decision, adding that when he
would receive the copy of verdict then he would come to know the basis of
punishment.
Replying a question, he said he would file appeal against the verdict in the
army court after receiving the copy of the verdict.
He said that we felt some things during the hearing of case and we had
decided at that time that we would appeal in the court after the decision.
It is worth mentioning here that on October 10, 2009, heavily-armed militants
wearing suicide vests, mounted a brazen attack on General Headquarters
Rawalpindi and held hostage army commandos for hours.
Nine of the attackers were killed in the operation while one was arrested
after he was wounded in the operation. He was identified as Aqeel, alias Dr
Usman. According to the prosecution, the accomplices had known about Aqeel’s
plans and had helped him to carry out the attack; meanwhile 11 military
personals were also martyred in this attack. SANA
