ISLAMABAD: The main accused in Rs6 billion National Police
Foundation land scam PML-N MNA Anjum Aqeel Khan was forcibly taken away
by the gun-toting PML-N workers Friday from the Shalimar Police station
causing embarrassment for the federal police.
According to
details, the PML-N stalwart was on interim bail until July 19 and had
gone to the FIA office in Iqbal Town earlier in the day to record his
statement. There the Shalimar police arrested him in another case
registered against him. The police officials had arrest warrant against
the PML-N lawmaker. They took him in custody and when they reached the
police station scores of the PML-N workers who had already gathered
there attacked the police vehicle carrying Anum Aqeel .
The
angry PML-N workers resorted to firing and subjecting the police to
torture managed to take the arrested MNA away from the police custody.
After
the incident police and district administration high ups reached the
scene and directed action against the PML-N workers. They also directed
action against the policemen if they were found involved in helping the
PML-N MNA out of the police custody.
By the time this report is
filed, police have arrested eight workers of the PML-N on the charges
of attack on police while police parties continued to raid in various
places for the arrest of the absconder.
According to sources,
Anjum Aqeel Khan who has already been trying to come out of the land
scam is now caught in double jeopardy and it will not be easy for him
to get himself free of the charges of escaping from the police custody
with the help of force. When SSP Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan was
contacted he could not give any clear reply in that context.
Meanwhile
Interior Minister Rehman Malik taking strong notice of the incident has
directed the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad to conduct a judicial
incident into the lapse and submit a report within 24 hours. He
directed immediate arrest of all those PML-N workers who were involved
in attacking on the police station. Interior Minister also ordered
arrest of the SP Nadim Hussain and SHO Shalimar Police Station Fiaz
Tanoli over their failure to check the escape of the PML-N lawmaker. In
the light of his directions Police registered another FIR against Anjum
Aqeel Khan and fifty workers of the PML-N and started raids to arrest
