Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza has said that the present democratic government has done necessary legislation for the welfare of women and children.
Addressing the National Conference on ‘Child Rights as Human Rights”
here on Saturday, she said that under the 18th constitutional
amendment, universal education has been made free and compulsory. This
in fact is the manifestation of the leadership’s resolve that education
is the basic need and birth right of every child.
The speaker pointed out that the constitution prohibits child labor
yet it is being practiced unabated. Therefore, there is a dire need to
check the trend not only through punitive actions but also by providing
viable alternatives. She said that such firm actions are also vital for
achieving the millennium development goals.
She said the National Assembly on its part has decided to constitute
a parliamentary committee on the Millennium Development Goals and it
will work with all the federating units to evolve a common strategy to
meet the MDGs. SANA
