Authoring foreign policy mandate of democratic rulers, not the army: Asma Jahangir

RAHIM YAR KHAN: President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Asma Jahangir has said authoring foreign policy is not domain of army but it is mandate of democratic rulers.

“ Formation of foreign policy is not mandate of military but it is job of democratic rulers. It has to be decided by the rulers they have to purchase gun or book at first’, she said this while addressing oath taking ceremony of District Bar Association Rahim Yar Khan here Saturday.
Dictatorship has gone but dictatorial minset is still working. However SCBA will continue its struggle till the elimination of dictatorial mindset , she declared.
SCBA is not funcioning under tutelage of government, she said adding it takes decisions on its own so that future of coming generation remains invulnerable.
“ I hold in high esteem all the judiciary from civil judge to Chief Justice of Pakistan. Judiciary should channelise all their energies in providing speedy and inexpensive justice to people”, she urged. However bar association will continue to hold the judges accountable if they pronounce any wrong verdict, she held.
There should be respresentation of bar association besides parliament and judiciary in the induction of new judges, she demanded.
Government should rely upon representatives of bar associations rather than taking secret reports from ISI or inspector of IB during the process of appointment of new judges, she stressed.
She urged the lawyers to take proactive steps for provision of speedy justice to common man and discourage the elements found involved in registeration of false cases.
She told that funds would be allocated for bar associations in federal and provincial budgets.
Time has come lawyers should focus on politics of serving the people rather than plots, she underlined. SCBA would evolve its agenda on its own in future and media should not set priorities of its agenda, she underscored.
She went on to say when Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani constituted the commissions to probe into Abbottabad incident and killing of Salim Shahzad without the approval of Chief Justice of Pakistan then SCBA opposed this step of prime minister first of all saying it was agaisnt the dignity of judiciary. Governent was forced to constitute commission with the approval of Chief Justice of Pakistan, she held. Online
