Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar has expressed his
satisfaction over the work of strengthening of protective embankments
of Indus River and said that the work on these dykes would be
completed by July. Talking
to media persons during inspection of the ongoing work of
strengthening of Indus River embankments at Mulla Katiar on Sunday,
the Minister informed that according to the forecast of Met Department,
the province would receive moderate rainfall in the monsoon season
this year however, due to the increase in level of water in the river,
the pace of work of strengthening the dykes has been geared up and it
is hoped that the same would be completed by July.
Responding to a question about the
damages caused by super floods last year, Federal Water and Power
Minister said that water level in Indus River had risen far beyond
expectation besides lack of measures to keep the dykes intact.
He said now the protective embankments are being strengthened and there would be no threat of breach as the Met Department has forecast a moderate rainfall this year.
Dispelling the propaganda by the opposition that flood would be three times higher this year, the Minister said that such propaganda has no basis, however, the government is making all out efforts besides precautionary measures to avert any eventuality during the expected flood and monsoon rains.
Replying to a question about the energy crisis, the Minister said that the crisis can not be addressed overnight and the government has decided to enhance the numbers of power production units this year, which, he said would help in reducing the duration of load management.
Among others, District Administrator Tando Muhammad Khan Ali Ahmed Lund, Executive District Officer Revenue Hadi Bux Zardari, Akbar Khaskheli and Abdul Lateef Soomro were also present on the occasion. APP
