Govt contacts Chief Justice Pakistan for proposed Abbotabad commission

Federal government has formally contacted the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for consultation regarding nominating a judge of the Supreme Court for the proposed investigation commission of the Abbotabad incident under the guidance of unanimous resolution of the Parliament passed on 14th May.

A letter written by government in this regard has been received by the Registrar Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Sources told a letter written by the Federal Law and Justice Secretary on Saturday to Chief Justice requested him to nominate a judge as a member of the judicial commission. Letter is expected to be delivered to the Chief Justice of Pakistan today (Monday).
Earlier, Government without the consultation of opposition leader and chief justice had announced a judicial commission headed by the Supreme Court Senior Judge Justice Javed Iqbal, which was rejected by opposition parties as soon as it was announced.
This is another attempt by the government to mend fences with Judiciary and opposition to implement the unanimous resolution of the Parliament which called for the formation of an impartial and independent commission to probe the US raid in Abbotabad on May 02 in consultation with Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
It is also worth mentioning here that the government had also formed commission headed by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar probing the murder of journalist Salim Shahzad, without the consultation of the Chief Justice of Pakistan; meanwhile during the hearing of a plea of PFUJ for the setting up of commission headed by SC judge, Chief justice in his remarks had said that it was the violation of the independent judiciary to announce any name of judge by government as head of commission without the consultation and permission of chief justice of Pakistan.
