Experts stress convergence of Pak-US interest in region

ISLAMABAD: Speakers at a conference have urged Pakistan and US to put their act together for regional peace as soon as possible.

The conference on ‘Pakistan-US divergence: Can the grip be bridged?’ was organised by Centre for International Strategic Studies (CISS) in collaboration with the Asia Foundation here in Islamabad Press club on Wednesday.
Representative of the Asia Foundation Masood Hussain said, “The two countries should not act independently,” adding that coordination and sharing efforts is very important.
The speakers on the occasion also stressed that Pakistan and US should realize each other strategic interest and proceed by accommodating each other.
They said that Indo-US strategic agreements have really disturbed the region and relations of Pakistan with US.
The speakers said that due to its relation with India, US is demanding accommodation of the Indian interest in Afghanistan and that is creating some difficulty. The speakers were of the view that safe exit for US is not possible without the help of Pakistan.
Some of the speakers pointed out that several countries have proxies in Afghanistan and some time withdrawal of US forces till 2014 seem difficult.
However, at the end the experts were agreed that gap between Pakistan and US policies in the region could be bridged.
The conference was attended by prominent academician, politician, strategists, researchers, journalists and others. Jonathan G. Pratt represented US embassy on the occasion. Online
