SAARC countries may form South Asian Parliament: Fehmida Mirza

ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza has suggested the SAARC countries to constitute a South Asian Parliament so as constant peace and prosperity may prevails in the region.

She was addressing the Working Session of SAARC Conference of the Parliamentarians at New Delhi. She said that the proposed South Asian Parliament could play the role of genuine representative of 1.70 billion people of the region, which can provide a forum to member countries for resolving the common problems.
“There should be frequent exchange of parliamentarians as well as people among SAARC countries so that peace, progress and democratic norm may flourish in the region. The member counters through effective co-operation can take benefit from the experience of each other” Speaker National Assembly added. .
She said that in South Asia the democracy could not be existed due to interference of despotic powers but now the fruit of democracy have started to reach to the common man here. This is the very reason that not only in Pakistan, but also in Nepal, Bangladesh and Afghanistan a new era of peoples’ expectations has been commenced.
Dr. Fehmida was of the opinion that the parliamentarians of SAARC members have a big responsibility on their shoulders to develop the culture of democracy, holding of free fair and impartial elections, independence of judiciary, vibrant civil society and liberal media in their respective countries.
She said that Pakistan has recently given the status of most favorite nation to India regarding trade. The decision would not only bring good results on the relations of both countries but also put positive affects in the region. Online
