Pervez Musharraf struck secret deal with US after 1999 coup: Report

Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf had a clandestine deal with the United States after he toppled the then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government and seized power in October 1999 in a bloodless coup, according to a Pakistani newspaper.
An immediate order to CENTCOM commander Anthony Zinni by the then US President Bill Clinton, after Musharraf engineered the military coup, was ‘kick him out’, The Nation reports.

Musharraf desperately waited for an okay at the headquarters of 5 Corps from Anthony Zinni till 2 am (PST) before going on air, the report said.

He was given a conditional ‘Yes from the White House, no martial law and a clear road map for general elections in Pakistan’, by almost ‘a lame duck’ Bill Clinton, it added.

Musharraf desperately chased legitimacy from October 1999 till September 11, 2001, and in reality, he earned a fortune after the 9/11 attacks.

Musharraf became the most sought after person, starting from Wendy Chamberlain (US ambassador to Pakistan) to Collin Powel, and became a darling of everybody who was at the Hill or close to DC, said the report.

Musharraf never knew what kind of deal he was going to cut with the United States, the report said, adding that it was not the one like, “yes we are with you”, but a beginning of an endless tale of miseries for the nation of Pakistan.

Thereafter, the story of Pakistan and the US ended, and the era of ‘Mush and Bush’ began. Clandestine deals were made at different occasions. Nothing was documented. Real knowledge only surfaced through the writings of Bob Woodward, according to the report. ANI
