Pakistan slams US allegation over slain journalist

ISLAMABAD - A state-run news agency in Pakistan says an allegation by a U.S. official that Islamabad sanctioned the killing of a Pakistani journalist is "extremely irresponsible."

The Associated Press of Pakistan late Thursday quoted an unnamed government spokesman as saying that authorities have created a panel to investigate the killing of Saleem Shahzad.

Shahzad's tortured body was found after he'd told friends he'd been threatened by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency. The ISI, which is notorious for harassing journalists, denies any role.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, said on Thursday he believed the Pakistani government "sanctioned" Shahzad's slaying but that he couldn't tie it to Pakistan's intelligence services. AP
