Public Accounts Committee of National Assembly granted time to PIA authorities for taking action against the officials responsible for irregularities and mismanagement in the organization at large scale.
The PAC summoned the report within one week about awarding contract to a favorite foreign company, causing 67-crorer loss to national treasure and appointment of eight high officials in PIA without permission of Prime Minister.
The PAC further summoned the report till 30th of this month about the neglecting the Committee proposals about the procurement of 342 kanals land for BB International Airport and payment of 14 crore to a property dealer without getting the possession of land.
Yasmin Rehman headed the Public Accounts Committee meeting which was held in parliament house here on Monday.
During the meeting, annual accounts of defence ministry and sub-organizations were verified and audit informed the committee that loss of PIA crossed 96 billion rupees till March 2011 and loans of 140 billions are yet to be paid.
Defence Secretary Lt General Syed Athar Ali told that PIA administration do not has control over debts and MD PIA Nadeem Yousufzai briefed the PAC about the performance of PIA.
He told that 107 billion rupees was the income of organization in 2010 and a special business plan is launched and he reveled that 5000 passports were theft and passengers faced troubles because visas were already issued on those passports.
Auditor general told the committee that short-term debts of PIA are increasing rapidly and PAC directed to discuss the performance of PIA in DAC, PAC directed to set goals for the organization to improve the performance.
PAC was informed that operating expenses of PIA are increased 58 percent and organization bears loss of four and a half billion rupees in 2010.
Defence Secretary told that any decision regarding the privatization of PIA hotels in America and France is not taken.
It was informed to the committee that during the 2006 and 2009 618 persons were employed against the code of conduct and 161 persons were non technical staff and national treasure faced loss of one billion and 16 crore and eight officials were reappointed without permeation of Prime Minister.
Defence Secretary told the committee that in the result of investigation former MD Tariq Kirmani, deputy MD Umar Gahfoor, senior vice President Wasim Bari were responsible and summary of the investigation is sent to Prime Minister.
He further told the PAC that business plan is sent to finance ministry for approval, he confessed that Singapore based company did not bring any change in the quality of PIA.
Yasmin Rehman said that behaviors are not changing after the heavy loss in PIA and no one is committed to improve the system, adding that organization is facing loss of billion rupees when no one is committed then it is like to just throw the money and contract of 11 million dollars is the great example of irregularities.
She said that PIA staff is not willing to change their behavior and she is an eyewitness that when a captain gives protocol to governor of a province and accompanied him to leave business class and no damage can be done without the collective efforts of employees.
Hamid Yar Hiraj said that rates of PIA are more then any other organization but its services are very poor and debts are skyrocketing, adding that bailout packages to corporations crossed the defence expenses.
Auditor General said that there are several scandals in PIA and no steps are even taken after the pointing out the irregularities in the organization, adding that private cargo companies given bogus check of 12 crore and 7.4 millions to organization.
PAC directed that if inquiry report is not completed within a week then inquiry officer should be changed and defence ministry would conduct investigation of the irregularities in management and organization.

Audit officials reveled that in 2006 342 kanals were purchased for BB International Airport and in March 2011 civil aviation confessed in the report that possession of land were still not handed over to the organization. This land was purchased four lac and 75 thousands per kanal but in the Attock district in 2008 its value was about one lac and few thousand . SANA
