Baluchistan govt gave Rs135 bn compensation to relatives of target killing’s victims, Supreme Court told

Islamabad: A hefty amount of Rs 135 billion have been paid to the heirs of those people who had been killed in target killing in Baluchistan from 2008 to 2011.

Baluchistan government is taking concrete measures to curb targeted killing in the province.
This was told by Chief Secretary Baluchistan to the Supreme Court. The hearing of target killing case was held at Supreme Court by eight member bench under the headship of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary.
Chief Secretary Baluchistan Ahmed Buksh Lehri appeared before the court on behalf of provincial government, who submitted report regarding law and order situation in Baluchistan province from 2009 to 2011.
The report revealed that during last two and half years some 200 people were killed while 512 persons were injured whereas some 181 dead bodies were recovered from different parts of Baluchistan.
The court showed apprehensions on the report and asked Chief Secretary that what steps were taken by the provincial government to stop target killing and recovery of missing persons.
In response Lehri informed the court that the government is utilizing all the resources for preventing target killing . In reply to another question, Chief Secretary told the bench that a sum of RS 135 billion were distributed among the relatives of the victims of target killings.
When asked by the Chief justice about missing lawyers Agha Tahir and Muneer Meharwani Chief Secretary Ahmed Buksh Lehri said that the relatives of missing lawyers are not extending their cooperation to the government.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary said in his remarks that the situation in the province has deteriorated , which demanded practical measures. It is not the time to sit in the office but to take solid steps to restore law and order in Baluchistan.
“In presence of large number of security forces, the plight of law and order is on decline. If now the conditions would not be improved then when it will get better in Baluchistan”, CJ added.
The Chief Justice observed that after the killing of Nawab Bugti, Ghulam Muhammad and Lala Munir the condition of Baluchistan could not be controlled .
Chief Secretary requested the court to give some more time for the preparation of comprehensive report. The court accepted the request and postponed the hearing till 23 May. Online
