24 killed as ferry capsizes in Bangladesh

Dhaka : A jampacked ferry today capsized after colliding with a ship wreck in the river Meghna in eastern Bangladesh, killing at least 24 people, mostly women and children, and leaving scores missing, police said.

The ferry, carrying more than 100 passengers was bound for Jamalganj from Bhairab when it sank after colliding with the wreckage of a trawler. The impact of the collision was so hard that it sent people sleeping on the deck plunging into the river at Sarail in Brahmanbaria, about 90 kms east of the capital, Dhaka.

"Twenty four bodies have been recovered after police launched a rescue effort along with local people," police said, who fear that the toll may rise.

"More bodies are trapped in the ferry. The divers are trying to get them up," police said.

A team of divers are helping to retrieve the bodies.PTI
