PM urges MPs to mobilise masses against extremism

Gilani says government determined to root-out extremism

* Says Bhatti’s murder attempt at destabilising country

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Thursday urged parliamentarians to play their leadership role to mobilise the nation against extremism and terrorism. He was talking to National Assembly members at the PM’s Chamber in the Parliament House.

Gilani called for changing the extremist mindset by mobilising the peace-loving people of Pakistan, adding that the government would employ all resources to root-out the cancer of terrorism and extremism which had become a stigma for the country.

The parliamentarians assured the prime minister, saying that all patriotic public representatives would support the government to overcome the challenge.

Separately, while speaking with a Swiss delegation at the PM’s Secretariat, Gilani said that the entire nation was united and committed to fight against terrorism at all cost and would not allow the extremist tendencies to spoil the social fabric.

Pakistan, being a frontline state against terrorism, had paid a huge price in terms of human lives and economic losses, the PM said, adding, “Our resolve to fight this menace would continue as we consider it our own war.”

Talking to the delegation of Swiss businessmen led by Dr Martin Dahinden, director general of the Swiss Development Cooperation, Gilani said that the government had adopted the policy of deterrence and development to tackle extremism and terrorism. The process of dialogue was used to resolve issues and at time deterrence was used to eliminate militants and terrorists, he added.

Dr Dahinden, on behalf of the government and people of Switzerland, expressed condolence on the killing of Minorities Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti and assured that the Swiss stood with Pakistan in the war against terrorism.

In a meeting with federal ministers and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) office-bearers at the PM’s House, the PM expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, saying that all possible measures would be taken to ensure the safety of minorities as they enjoyed constitutional protection. He reiterated that the PPP platform should also be utilised to create awareness about the negative agenda of extremist elements.

Gilani said that the tragic murder of Shahbaz Bhatti was an act and attempt of anti-state elements to defame the country and destabilise the system.

Separately, the premier, while noting the important role of media in defeating designs of extremists, urged it to educate people in the right direction.

Talking to a delegation of the National Press Club led by its president Muhammad Afzal Butt at the PM’s House, Gilani said the brutal murder of Bhatti was yet another attempt of enemies of the state to defame Pakistan and the philosophy of tolerance, envisaged by the founder of the nation Quaid-e-Azam. app/staff report
