Supreme Court taking notice of the shoulder promotions in Punjab police on Thursday
announced that an order would be issued after examining the report
submitted by the Inspector General (IG) of police regarding the
seniority of police officers.
A three member bench headed by the Justice Javed Iqbal and
comprising Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Khiljee Arif Hussain
held the hearing of the suo-moto action taken on the out of turn
promotions of junior police officers under obligatory powers.
Justice Javed Iqbal remarked that court would announce a principle
for further promotions after the detailed examination of the report
presented by IG police putting a ban on out of turn promotions.
He said the officer who kills more persons is granted out of turn
promotions and the distinctive police officers would have to revert
back to their places.
He said women are discouraged to reach top posts in police and court would issue a separate order relating only to women.
Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, Akram Sheikh and Hamid Khan appeared before
the court to represent those high officers getting out of turn
promotions while sub-inspectors, inspectors and other small scale
police personnel presented themselves before the court.
DSP and Sub Inspector ranked six women police officers also appeared
before the court. They pleaded the court that they are serving for past
23 years but haven’t been granted deserved promotions.
Later court adjourned the further hearing of the case till July 12th. SANA
