Former president gen (retd) Pervaz Musharraf was intended to dissolve the parliament after the 2008 elections to save his position and wanted to installed technocratic government.
American Ambassador NW Peterson’s secret diplomatic cable sent to
Washington in August 2008 reveled that Musharraf wanted to dissolve the
parliament to save his position and this would enhance uncertainty and
demand to remove the Musharraf would get momentum so coalition
government through Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani should be
supported.
According to documents, Nawaz Sharif had become popular leader of
Pakistan through launching go Muaharraf go campaign, Yousuf Raza Gilani
is supporting silently Musharraf’s resignation and Musharraf wanted
clear assurance of American support for security of his position.
On the other hand, Yousuf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari
were afraid that they cannot afford to remain in political system with
Musharraf, adding that Yousuf Raza Gilani impatiently assured Americans
that Pakistan is more the willing to fight war against terrorism.
Documents revealed that according to Patterson, Yousuf Raza Gilani
is head of a weak government and Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif are
the real power centers and both are out of parliament and fighting for
political victory.
Documents further stated that Nawaz-Zardari alliance for democratic
government would end soon and Asif Ali Zardari would needed other
coalition partners and Army Chief General Ashfiq Kayani was away from
this matter and he was in favor of resignation instead of Musharraf’s
