India and Pakistan failed on Tuesday to agree on how to demilitarize the world's highest battlefield in the Himalayan region in a sign of how far apart the nuclear-armed rivals are even on less contentious issues.
Defense secretaries from both countries held two days of closed-door talks in the Indian capital on how to reach an agreement on withdrawing troops from the mountainous no-man's land above the Siachen glacier and defining the official border.
It was the 12th round of inconclusive talks on Siachen, considered one of the less difficult disputes to resolve between India and Pakistan.
"Both sides agreed to continue the discussions in a meaningful and result-oriented manner. They agreed to meet again on a mutually-convenient date in Islamabad," a joint statement by India and Pakistan said. Reuters
